What an AI sommelier can and can't do

An AI sommelier is software that does a small part of what a human sommelier does: it looks at wines you could choose from and says which ones fit you. The phrase covers very different tools, so it helps to know what to expect. Broadly there are three kinds: chat assistants you ask about a wine or a food pairing, apps that read one label at a time, and apps that read a whole shelf and rank it. This guide covers the last kind, which works from a photograph, such as Easy Wine App, an AI sommelier for iPhone.

What it can do

The useful jobs are the ones that are tedious to do by hand in a shop.

What it cannot do

Most of the limits follow from one fact: software has not tasted anything.

How to use one sensibly

Treat the result as a shortlist, not an answer. A few habits help.

  1. Start with a clear photo. A shelf photographed close enough that you could read the labels yourself gives the software a fair chance; see “How to photograph a wine shelf so the labels can be read”.
  2. Set your taste honestly. A dry-to-sweet scale and a budget only work if they describe what you really like.
  3. Read the reason given for each suggestion and check it against the bottle in your hand.
  4. Rate what you try. Your ratings are what make the next shelf better suited to you.
  5. If something looks wrong, trust the bottle.

Check the bottle itself

For anything that matters, read the bottle rather than the app: alcohol content, allergens such as sulphites, and origin are printed on the label, and the label is the authority. Recommendations from an AI are generated from a photograph and can be wrong. If you want to check the label yourself, see “How to read a wine label”, and for narrowing a shelf by hand, “How to choose a wine in a shop”.

What happens to the photo

With Easy Wine App the photo is sent through our server to an AI model, Google Gemini, and is kept only as long as the scan needs it. There is no account, and your scan history and My wines stay on your phone. The home page has the details on how the app works and where to get it.

In short

An AI sommelier is a fast, patient reader of labels that ranks them by the taste you describe. It is not a taster, and it is not infallible. Used as a way to narrow a crowded shelf down to a few bottles worth a closer look, it saves time. Used as a replacement for your own judgement, or for a good human sommelier when one is available, it will sometimes let you down.
